Equine Herpes 1 Virus

As many of you will be aware there have been confirmed cases of deaths as a result of Equine Herpes 1 Virus ( EHV-1) at Crofton Manor Equestrian Centre, near Stubbington, Hampshire.

It is therefore advisable to closely monitor any horses that have travelled to or have arrived from Stubbington and surrounding areas during the last 4 weeks. Should this apply to you, it’s is advised to isolate your horse and any in contact horses, and monitor daily rectal temperature for the next two weeks.

Normal body temperature for the horse should be between 37.5-38.5 degrees Celsius, donkeys and foals will differ. Other clinical signs to look out for are: inappetence, lethargy, nasal discharge, coughing and in some cases neurological signs. We would also like to suggest that all travel should be assessed on an individual basis and only performed if deemed safe and or necessary.

We would also like to use this opportunity to reiterate the importance of good bio security on your yard, we will be happy to give any advise towards this should you require it.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions and we will keep you updated as the situation progresses.
